A Driving Tour of Moravia

We set off on Friday with a plan. We were going to rent a car and drive to Poland with three friends. We never made it to Poland, but we did have a great weekend in the eastern portion of the Czech Republic.

We arrived in Olomouc and found, to our surprise, not only snow but a Russian jet converted into a dance club. Worth checking out...

Somehow snowy statues look even nicer than those without snow. Olomouc is a university town of about 100,000 people, and it has an old walled section downtown.



Our Skoda Fabia rental car. This thing is great. It drives like a VW Golf, which it pratically is since VW bought Skoda a few years ago. Although some might think that it is too small for five people, we like to think of it as cozy. So far only a small amount of snow on the roads...


An interesting castle stands behind us: it has parts over 500 years old, but most of it is only about 100 years old. The next picture really shows how much of a patchwork it is.


Continuing to cruise, we found another small town called Bouzov that looks up at this magnificent castle. Sadly the doors were locked and even though the sign said that the castle was open, there was nobody home except two giant guard dogs. They didn't mind us taking pictures, though.

Back in Olomouc trying to stay warm with hot beverages from the Christmas market. There are dozens of small sheds that sell all manner of decorations, beverages, ornaments, and trinkets. The awnings help keep us out of the rain, as well.

On Sunday we finally had to fill the gas tank. The gas for this trip cost more than the rental car. Brandon pumping away.

For those of you interested in math (or maths, as the British English textbooks use) try to figure out the price of gasoline. You'll have to do the research to figure out the exchange rate and the conversion from liters to gallons. First one to post the correct answer within $0.05 wins a prize!

No looking back: we came, we saw, we drove through the snow. Heading west again on some small, snowy roads in Northern Moravia.

Of course we had to stop at yet another castle. Because of the snow Tina had to pull me up the hill: I still fell about six times due to slippery shoes.

After this final castle we cruised back to Prague to conclude a wonderful weekend.
